CHOC Cruise

Our sponsored event for the hospital is known as the CHOC Cruise and takes place in December.  Everyone participating is asked to bring a new unwrapped toy to donate.  The foundation invites custom car enthusiasts and clubs from all over California to participate.  In recent years the CHOC Cruise has even attracted clubs and individuals from other states.  A wide array of vehicles can be seen at the cruise including: classics, mini-trucks, low riders, 4X4’s, and sport compact cars.

Childrens Hospital Orange County

Children’s Hospital of Orange County is among the top 25 hospitals in the U.S. and is greatly in need of support.  Within the last 8 years admissions at the hospital have grown by 90% making the hospital 15th in rank among the busiest hospitals in the country.

Where It's At

Each year Edison Field graciously donates its parking lot as a staging point for the event.  From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm vehicles gather in lot in anticipation of the event.  People and clubs intermingle and take pictures with the Santa’s Helpers Gauge Magazine provides.    At 12:00 pm the caravan leaves for the hospital where the children anxiously wait.  Those who are well enough are brought down to the front of the hospital to watch the caravan and play in the vehicles parked in front of the hospital.  Each year five or so vehicles are selected to sit in front of the hospital.  Children are allowed to enter said vehicles to take pictures and hit the switches.  Playtime Foundation also provides a Santa Clause to entertain and the children during the event.  As the vehicles enter the front of the hospital they pass their donations to the Santa’s helpers and wave to the children as they exit.

Helping Children

CHOC is Orange County’s only free standing hospital dedicated solely to the care of children.  No child is ever turned away regardless of a family’s ability to pay.  In 2007 alone, the hospital provided more than $60 million in uncompensated care.

It's All About The Kids

The CHOC Cruise has become one of the hospitals largest toy donators for Childrens Hospital.   It is estimated the cruise provided around $50,000 in toy donations 2007.   Families with children in the hospital often have a difficult time providing a Christmas for their child due to bills and absence from work.   The donations provided by the cruise not only allows the hospital to give the children a toy at Christmas and every other major holiday as well as at the time of major procedures, operations, and upon checking out of the hospital.  Better yet, the busy bustle of custom cars entertains and brightens the children’s day.  For an hour or so the kids of CHOC hospital stop dwelling on their illness and become just that, kids again.

CHOC's Mission

To nurture, advance and protect the health and well-being of children. That’s why at CHOC and CHOC at Mission, we are dedicated to working cooperatively — assisting and enriching existing services as well as developing programs to benefit the families of Orange County. In fiscal year 2005, over 200,000 children came through our doors for inpatient, outpatient and emergency room visits — regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
